According to the data from the Transparency International which is the leading global civil society organization that fight against corruption, Japan has a score of 74 out of 100 on the corruption perceptions index (CPI) and ranked 18 out of 177 countries (Transparency 2014). On the other hand, Ukraine has a score of 25 out of 100 and ranked 144 out of 177 countries (Transparency 2014). The outcome of the CPI is drawn on data which is related to corruption collected by various independent and reliable institutions (Transparency 2014). The percentage ranges from 0 (highly corrupted) to 100 (very clean). Hence, Ukraine is more corrupted with the score of 25 on the CPI as compared to Japan with the score of 74. Corruption can also decrease the ability of the government as fund that can be used for better purpose such as improvement of the people welfare is spent on controlling corruption (Vito 1998, pg28). All these will hamper the economic development of the country. Q2. Generally, the overall political risk of Japan is considered low (The PRS Group 2013, pg U1) as compared to Ukraine which has a moderate level of political risk (The PRS Group 2013, pg 3). There are a few cases of political risk that happened in Ukraine in the past. In 2008, a Production Sharing Agreement that involved exploration of gas and oil in the Black Sea was cancelled by the Ukraine government abruptly (The PRS Group 2013, pg11). Two years later, a US invested floating restaurant was closed down by law enforcement officials without further documentation and access to the owners (The PRS Group 2013, pg11). Notably, an eligible foreign investor is provided guarantees against nationalization under the law. However, there are exception applied to the cases of national emergencies, accidents or epidemics (The PRS Group 2013, pg11).
